Staff Spotlight on... Heidi!
Meet Heidi Berke!

How long have you worked at MRN?

I joined the MRN in January 2020 as a senior member of the business development team based out of our Skokie, IL office.

Before working at MRN, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

I have worked in the clinical trials industry since the late 1990s, so I’ve certainly had a lot of interesting jobs over the years. My background is in nursing, so the jobs that I have loved the most are the ones that have been directly related to increasing global patient access to clinical trials and to new treatments. MRN is a great fit for me because our service offering is focused on bringing clinical trials to the patients and communities.

What 3 words best describe MRN for you?

When I think of words that describe MRN, the words that come to mind are: genuine (we have a culture of honesty and transparency, both internally and in our dealings with clients and partners), expertise (with 14 years of experience bringing clinical trial visits to the patients, we know what we’re doing!), and innovative (the clinical trials landscape is always changing and MRN has an actual department dedicated to making sure we continuously innovate so that we can continuously meet the needs of our customers and the patients we serve).

What do you like most about MRN?

I’ve worked for many different types of companies during my 20+ year in the clinical trials industry. I have found MRN to have the most the most supportive, healthiest, kindest, most genuine work environment that I have ever experienced. With the multi-dimensional challenges that this pandemic has brought, it has been so important and so valuable to work for and with people that are truly human.

What do you want to achieve while at MRN?

As someone in BD, I hope to contribute significantly to MRN’s growth in terms of awarded projects and revenue. I also hope to share my industry experience in a way that allows me to contribute to MRN’s Continuous Improvement initiative in a meaningful way.

What is your biggest achievement to date – personal or professional?

I seem to have successfully raised my 19-year-old twins, Alex and Emily, to be kind people and good global citizens. As they go out into the world (and I become an empty-nester!), I’m looking forward to watching and seeing how they navigate the paths they have chosen.

If given a chance, who would you like to be for a day?

I’d love to be one of the best women alpine skiers in the world, probably Lindsay Vonn, on a race day. It would be amazing to experience what it feels like to ski that well and that fast and to win over all the other incredible skiers.

If you could witness any historical event, what would you want to see?

I wasn’t even a year old when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon, so I’d love to sit in my family’s 1969 living room, huddled around the TV and witness that historic moment and hear those historic words. Taking it a step farther, it would be even cooler to witness it in person, on the moon!

What is the first concert you attended?

The Jackson Five Victory Tour in 1984 at Comiskey Park in Chicago!

Do you have a favourite quote or saying?  “That which you focus on expands.”

What is your favourite thing to do?

Aside from the obvious, which is spending time with my kids and other family and friends, I absolutely love to ski in the winter and bike ride in the summer.

What’s something you’d like to experience?

My bucket list includes many things……one that is near the top of the list is seeing the Northern Lights from Iceland.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Focus on the present. It’s so easy to spend time regretting the past or worrying about the future. Living like that makes it really hard to enjoy the “now”, the present moment. Life is ultimately made up of a string of present moments.
